I have to agree with you here (on both the fanfic and the Sirius
comments). In OoP we see a Sirius we did not previously know at all,
but we also saw much of what made him that way. The man spent years
in a jail far worse than anything our world could dish out - and for
a crime he did not commit but blamed himself for anyway. Then, when
he finally escapes, so does the man who was the real criminal and now
Sirius must spend all of his time in hiding - in a house he left when
he was 16 because he hated it so much. For that, my heart goes out
to him. How could Sirius possibly have matured enough to deal with
adult responsibilities when he has spent most of his adult life in
isolation? It is understandable that he still thinks like a Hogwarts
student, as that time was clearly the best of his life.

I'm not excusing his behavior; I was quite surprised when he left
Harry in a huff because Harry was not willing to take the same risks
that James did (or so Sirius thought), but really, Sirius was looking
for some excitement. He doesn't exactly have the best grip on
reality. His moodiness was also that of a petulant child's, and I
can understand Molly's impatience with him as well. Sirius doesn't
make things easier for everyone when he goes off, frowning to hide
upstairs with Buckbeak.

However, we can't forget that Snape doesn't exactly act as an adult
around Sirius either, what with his snide comments about Sirius
not "out there risking his life" and instead is "sitting on his
backside... having a comfortable time". That's just bratty.

Whatever behavior Sirius displayed throughout OoP, he certainly
didn't deserve to die. If anyone thinks he did, what terrible thing
did he do to earn his own death?
