I started to wonder about why it was Snape's worst memory.  Maybe 
it's because he was a bit of a loner before, but after this incident 
he sought out friends who could protect him a bit more and these 
friends were the (excuse my paraphrasing here) 'gang of Slytherins 
that nearly all turned out to be deatheaters'.

Like David says, it may not just be the humiliation, but the 
consequences that came from that incident.
