I just had a thought: what if it's important for the resolution of
the story for Snape and Harry to work together, but that would never
be possible if Sirius is alive? I think that's one of the points
JKR was trying to get across in her (IMO heavyhanded) descriptions
of Sirius's negative influence over Harry: It's kind of like Sense
and Sensibility, with Snape representing Sense and Black
Sensibility. With the influence of the rash, mercurial Black in his
life, Harry's life might have been more in danger, and/or his
progress slower, and/or he would have progressively picked up more
resentment towards Snape, thereby driving the Gryffindor/Slytherin
wedge even deeper, at a time when unity is paramount.
