Sounds yo me like your basic self-fulfilling prophecy ala Oedipus
"A child born as the seventh month dies" could easily have applied
to Harry, Nevile or a thousand other wizards born at the end of
July, but wouyldn't have neant ANYTHING if Voldemort hadn't
atteavked Harry in the first place.
Dumbledore refered to the prophecy's possible mislabeling and that
it could still apply to Neville. Maybe Neville could have picked up
the prophecy, he didn't try.
Could Neville still kill Voldemort in the final battle? Possibly, as
Voldemort's new body may be mortal.
Neville made GREAT improvement with Harry as a teacher in OOP. Harry
did well in his Potion OWL without Snape leaning over his shoulder.
I look forward to more Neville in books 6 & 7 (Personally when he
accompanied Harry into the MoM rescue mission I thought he was done
for.
