True story:
When I was in MilCol, there was a guy in my squadron... really good
guy, but a real hardcase on women in the military (the Canadian Forces
is 100% co-ed) Always spouting off about how women had no place in
combat, didn't belong in MilCol, yadda yadda yadda. I mean _all the
time_ Could not shut him up about this.
There was also this girl in 6 squadron, upstairs. A real good head -
sorta a quiet, less goody-goody version of Hermonie (even had the same
hair, come to think of it) She was in my platoon in Basic, and really
impressed me with the way she carried herself, and her quiet
competance. Good soldier.
But she was a Newf too, and get her riled and she could be as vocal as
any of her cousins - and a sure-fire way to get her riled was to try
and dis women in the military.
Well these two would go at each other hammer and tongs over this
subject. Rhetorical peaks not seen since the days of open debate on
the steps of the Roman Senate. And passionate too - heartfelt,
powerful stuff.
So one night a bunch of us (including them) go to Montreal to see a
movie, and I've got this secret parking spot up on Peel St. that puts
us about 10 blocks away from the theatre, so we've got a bit of a hump
there and back. The two of them are leading the way, and they're
arguing the same old subject to beat the band - but giggling and
laughing at the same time.
In the movie theatre, they spend as much time tickling each other as
they do watching the movie. And I'm sitting next to them, and I'm
watching this behaviour, and I'm getting this really strong vibe...
...except that it's impossible. Oil and water. Fire and ice. Cats and
dogs. I'd sooner believe any one of THOSE scenarios before I believe
this one.
But yet....
So we leave the theatre post-movie, and they strike off in the lead
again... and I just can't take it any more. I nudge the guys, and I
say "Boys, I think I'm going crazy, because I swear to God that those
two are hooking up"
And the response is pretty much agreement that I'm totally off my nut.
Oil and water. Cats and dogs. Etc.
...and then out of nowhere, they start holding hands. You could have
knocked the four of us over with a freakin' feather. Dumbfounded.
Gobsmacked. Would never believe it if I hadn't seen it myself.
Well... that and the big sloppy goodnight kiss we saw when we got back
to the shacks.
I get pretty much the exact same vibe in every Ron/Hermonie scene. :)
