I wondered that too, and I thought of the age/comprehnsion 
explanation too, but I think that Harry didn't see his mother's death 
at all.  He certainly heard it, but the only references I remember to 
what he saw only describe a flash of green light.  He perhaps hid his 
eyes, or was blinded by the flash.  So unless I'm forgetting a 
reference to him actually seeing his mother die, it fits.
