Actually, you have to be the one the prophecy is about to take the
prophecy from the shelf intact.  Meaning, you will not loose it and it
can be heard and used.  When Harry and Dumbledore's Army was defending
themselves, they knocked over and broke a slew of other prophecies. 
Also the DE curses blasted a few as well, and those prophecies were
lost.  So all and all, Dumbledore *could* have destroyed that "weapon"
if he wanted to, but frankly, all I saw was the OoP calling it a
"weapon".  After all, they could not call it bait, now could they?  :D

See, if Dumbledore had just gone in and thrown his shoe at it, then
Voldie would have never gone to the MoM and Fudge would have never
seen him.  The DE's would have never been caught trying to steal it,
and the WW would still think they are safe.  So basically, I believe
Dumbledore used it as bait for Voldie once he knew that was what
Voldie was after.  How this works with MD will be discussed later.
