After reading OOP the first time, my personal list would have been:
1. GOF
2. POA
3. OOTP
4. PS
5. COS

I, also, missed a bit the whodunit-plot. I am a fan of murderer novel 
and I always founf this part of the story very interesting. On the 
other hand, I liked the gloomy mood the book had, I liked how Harry 
learned most important things second hand and how it becomes clear, 
that something evil raised around Hogwarts. And I love, love, love 
that James Potter suddenly isn't a saint any longer, but a human 
being with faults. For the first time, I found myself really liking 
Ginny and Sybill Trelawney and I was thrilled to see Neville's 
character development.
