Lynn:

For the first question, I wonder if perhaps one reason Snape is so
harsh with Neville is because that's how Snape was while at
Hogwarts. It would certainly make sense if Snape came from a
background as horrid as that one snippet of memory revealed. Snape
may certainly have known a lot about the Dark Arts but that wouldn't
necessarily mean that he had the confidence to apply them. It may
well be that the reason Snape fell in with the Death Eaters is that
for the first time he did have some power in his life.

Me:

I'ld kind of ike to expand on this because while reading it I was
reminded of the glance Harry got into snape head. One of the scenes
was of a small boy crouch in a corner away from his horrible yelling
parents. In the muggle world it is common for abused children to
grow up to be abusers. Maybe there's a correlation between how Snape
treats Neville and how he was treated as a child. Like the only way
to improve the pathertic child is to try to toughin him up by being
brutal towards him. This somewhat goes along with the theories that
Snape is mean to the Gryfindors and nice to the Slytherins as a back
door way of making the Slytherins weak and the others strong.
