Good point! There certainly are many instances of 'doing things the 
hard way' or 'not doing things the easy way' in all of the books.  I 
think we just have to accept that this is fiction and not a 
historical account of true events.  Good storytelling is meant to 
entertain us.  It's not necessarily going to meet the criteria that 
we'd expect for logical human behavior!  ;-)  

Having said that, I fully admit that I enjoy dissecting the books and 
hearing what all of you have to say!
