OOP: The Black Veil

Can someone please clarify for me what the room where Sirius died 
looked like, and where he fell when he died? I was slightly confused 
by the description in OOP. There were steep steps leading to a pit. 
In the pit was a dais, and the stone archway stood on the dais. 
(p.799 US hardcover) A few pages later, Sirius fell through a doorway 
and then disappeared behind the black veil. How? Where was he 
standing while fighting Bellatrix?
