I have re-subscribed today so I have not read previous posts so forgive me
if this has been hashed and re-hashed already.

The D ----

Knowing there was a death in OotP, I was waiting apprehensively at every
turn. I never imagined it would be Sirius because it would just be wrong.
Thinking about it now, Sirius had to be the one that "died" because if it
was anyone else, we as readers would not feel as much remorse. I don't
mean that I would not feel any sadness if Neville or Hagrid or any other
somewhat major character died but Sirius's death would and did make me feel
the most remorse knowing how Harry felt about him. Harry loved Sirius , it
was the closest thing he could come to his parents and obviously his
parents felt the same since he was made Harry's godfather. Funny thing for
me is that since I knew a death was coming (I didn't when Cedric died) it
was less traumatic, for a lack of a better word, and also, it was the
logical conclusion, I was not shocked. What makes a good book is to inspire
emotions. My reaction was not as strong as I thought it would be (no more
spoilers for me) and I feel somewhat empty. If there is no body, there is
no proof. I re-read the passages over and over again and even though Sirius
was hit with a red light in the chest and fell into the veil, I did not
"see" him die. I also didn't hear what spell was used. Lupin also said
(American Edition Page 806) "There is nothing you can do
Harry...nothing....He's gone." , Lupin never actually said "dead", and also
on Page 807, " He can't come back Harry", said Lupin, his voice breaking as
he struggled to contain Harry." He can't come back, because he's d-----".
Mind you, Dumbledore did actually say to Harry that "it was his
(Dumbledore's) fault Sirius died") but not knowing what that veil is and
what it is all about I can't say I think Sirius is still alive but I can't
wholly believe that he really did die. Yes, I might just be in denial. I
will have to re-read again just incase I missed the part about the veil and
it's purpose. All I know is that the death was empty for me. Harry's
reaction was very realistic and one of the saddest parts of the book but it
wasn't as definite as Cedric's death .
