Frankly, I'm shocked D-Dore would let Harry leave his office
believing this to be true, given D-Dore's constant harping about
choices and actions and paths. I'm also shocked D-Dore would take the
literal interpretation to heart. To have Harry's life dictated by a
prophecy goes against everything the books say in terms of choices
mattering more than blood and the right path over the easy path.<<<

Me (Errol):

I'm totally with Darrin on this one. Absolutely.
As Freinze tells us, Prophesy is open to so many interpretations and
I'm shocked too that Dumbledore would take it all at face value.
(though we now know why he puts up with a totally inefficient
Trelawny at Hogwarts – it's the only way to keep her safe and
out of Voldmort's reach). My instinctive reaction to
Dumbledore's explanation of the Prophesy was to scream "Magic
dishwasher". Now, I'm not a great proponent of MD – in
fact it usually makes me cringe – but why, WHY would Dumbledore
tell Harry the entire prophesy when his mind is still open to
Voldemort? True, Voldemort cannot possess Harry totally due to his
inherent goodness/ love (?) but he can still access his mind to a
certain extent. Wouldn't Dumbledore immediately take steps to seal
Harry's mind now that he has had to tell him the `truth'?
Makes me
consider that there was another paragraph or two to that prophesy
that Dumbledore forestalled. And the black and white interpretation
of "Murder– or Die"would be the obvious one to Voldemort.

Does Dumbledore really believe in destiny/ Fate/ Prophesy? To what
extent? Where does free will come into play? Where does the darklord
ens and Tom Riddle begin?
If this is a case of MD, how can Dumbledore lay such a burden on
Harry? Isn't he setting Harry up for repeated vicious attacks by
Voldemort if it ever gets back to him? Does attacking Harry weaken
Voldemort? Is that Harry's secret power? If you ask me, MD just
got a new leg to stand on (even if others have been amputated) ;)
We also know now that Dumbledore does not always tell the truth...

Errol
Still too numbed to be witty. Sorry Darrin – no band names from
me.
