Firstly, I don't think that JKR puts stuff into the books arbitrarily
and then forgets them. When Sirius gave him the package and didn't
want Molly to know about it, Harry assumed that it meant that it
would be something that could lead someone to him. It's my wish that
he had actually opened the package to see what it was. Also, Harry
did leave pretty suddenly from the fireplace, so that there wasn't a
chance for it. I think it's one of those things that makes his death
even more preventable- but maybe that's the point.
