One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the
name James and his group give to Snape: Snivellus. They call him this
repeatedly and ask him once if he's going to wipe his nose. It makes me
wonder, how did he get this nickname? Is he prone to colds? Does he turn
his nose up at them and sniff? Or did they see him cry once? ... but it does make one wonder why they
picked Snivellus as a term with which to taunt him.
Snivel: 1). to cry and sniffle 2). to complain and whine 3). to make a tearful, often false, display of grief. - Webster's New World Dictionary, 1990. Given this definition, Snape having a cold is not going to cut it. I'm thinking they either caught Snape crying, or made him cry at some point, and now think that it's glorious fun to taunt him about it. The alternate theory would be that Sirius is making reference to Snape complaining about/during the times Sirus and James are harassing him.
