Jens says regarding Lily's surprise at Snape's suppusedly newly found racism

And one could just as esily surmise that she blinked in surprise because she
was stunned that he would be so stupid and crass as to attack the person
defending him, regardless of whether or not he had habitually used that nastly
little slur in the past. She was trying to defuse the situation and let him get
away and he said the one thing gauranteed to make it worse. I'd be surprised
he'd be that dumb, cleverness and self-preservation are Slytherin traits after
all. Why wouldn't she be surrpised at that as well?
It's all subjective. Memory is a funny thing that way. Some people want to
assume Snape never had a racist thought or uttered a single slur before that
moment, others suspect otherwise in each case how they read the limited text is
influence by their own personal predjudices.
I rather think that Lily bore a strong resemblance to Hermione in her
willingness to be open and kind, even to pretty unpleasant people.
