That's an interesting thought.  I seem to recall in my befuddled 
brain reading an interview/chat with JKR in which she said something 
to the effect that the death in Book 5 was necessary for the plot.  
Now it could mean all of the other things people have mention:  
hero's journey, hard life lessons for Harry, an illustration that 
life is unfair, etc.  

But the thought that it had to be Sirius because that is the crucial 
point to set up Bellatrix in the next book is one I hadn't seen 
before.
