I don't think that's it. I think the books are getting darker, and
aimed more towards an adult audience, because *Harry* is getting
older. As he gets older, he becomes more aware of the evil in the
world, he and his friends are more likely to use swear words or do
dangerous or violent things, etc. SS/PS was told from an 11 year
old's point of view; OoP is told from a 15 year old's point of view.
JKR has also said that she plotted the story arc out in advance,
before any of the books were published. This means she had always
intended the books to get darker as the series progressed.
JKR has said that she never intended the books for any particular age
group. I think it was the book publishers who decided to market them
as "children's" books.
