Re: the current discussion about Harry 'focusing his anger' to cast
a proper Cruciatus etc:

I'm not sold on Crouch!Moody's and Bellatrix's (sp?)
characterisation of how to cast Crucio, and I also disagree with
what I've read so far about needing to 'want' to kill someone in
order for AK to work.

I personally think that it's more a matter of how adept you are at
casting the spells - haven't the Unforgiveables been described
elsewhere in Canon as very advanced magic?

I don't say that evil intent plays no part, but I think it's more
about practice and tutelage from a skilled mentor, when it comes to
the Unforgiveables. Otherwise, it would be much too dangerous,
IMO. If all it took was sufficient focussed hatred and intent, then
resentful teenagers, drunken husbands and battered wives would be
using them all over the place.

And as for the strict repercussions for using the Unforgiveables
being a deterrent, well... capital punishment exists all over the
world, and that doesn't deter people.

I prefer to think that the Unforgiveables are not only illegal and
culturally-frowned-upon, but also an exclusive, advanced brand of
magic that requires focussed work and guidance to perfect.

Therefore, I doubt that Harry could teach himself to cast AK or
Cruciatus - at least, not without actually practicing on living
creatures, which I *doubt* will happen. At least, I hope not.
