Something else that occurs to me... What if MWPP were not only all in 
the same house, but that in *their* year they were the only four 
Gryffindor boys? There are only five of them in Harry's year, after all, 
and those nocturnal activities might be part of the explanation for 
Peter's inclusion as part of the group.

After all, if James and Sirius have hit upon this splendid plan to sneak 
out at night and meet up with Remus in Animagus form, sooner or later 
Peter's going to wake up and either find them missing or just on their 
way out of their shared dormitory. It might well be that they included 
him as part of the plan simply because they were afraid that if they 
excluded him and he found out, he might tell tales.

And once the Animagus scheme was actually up and running, they'd 
naturally bond more as co-conspirators. They'd probably continue to 
tease Peter and view him as the tag-along, as we see in Snape's memory 
from the Pensieve, but it would confirm his status as part of the 
foursome.
