OoP: What was the Point of this Death? And Phineas ??s

Getting past the eloquent reasonings about why the character should 
not have died, that he had a lot more to offer, etc, etc, etc, I 
think his death had one point, and one point only:

In war, people die for stupid reasons and it doesn't matter that 
someone may need them.

That it.  Period.  Also, my money is on the theory that the curse 
knocked him off balance and he died when he passed through the veil.
