I'm going out on a limb to say that I think this is the most
important line in the book.
I think the reason Snape reacted the way he did to this line is
because it showed the beginnings in Harry of the kind of maturity
and behaviour that shows true character. Harry was under pressure,
agitated, and had already shown earlier in OotP and previous books a
tendency to be flippant, intemperate, or even dishonest in answering
queries from teachers about his behaviour. However, in this
instance, he gave an answer that showed restraint, courage, respect
and honesty.
It lends credence to my opinion that Harry's dishonesty, disrespect
and self-justification in dealing with Snape is one of the reasons
Snape has always been so hard on him.
