The blank canvas was likely the former home of Phineas Nigellus'
portrait. Except he isn't normally in it because he's normally in
his portrait in Dumbledore's office? Remember Harry -did- hear
Phienas' voice from the blank canvas when he was in the room.
I'm not sure what the rules for people in portraits are - like if
they're in one portrait, can they simultaneously be in another
portrait of themselves?
Dumbledore said that "Sirius knows not to take down that portrait [of
Phineas]" or something when he was telling Phineas to go to it. I
don't know how Sirius feels about Phineas, but perhaps he did some
kind of charm to make the canvas blank but still allow Phineas to go
to it (to relay messages from Dumbledore).
