I am pretty sure that James and Lily Potter worked in the Department of 
Mysteries, and that they were indeed studying life, death, afterlife, 
time, love, etc. In fact I think that Lily was studying Love Magic in 
that Locked room we did not get to see into.

I think she knew exactly what she was doing when she put all her love & 
compassion into Harry at the moment of her death, and that it was a 
concious act of magic on her part. I am quite sure now that Harry will 
make use of the veil in the Death Room in book 6 or 7 to speak to or to 
actually visit the dead to gain knowledge of how to defeat Voldemort. I 
also am inclined to think the best way to vanquish evil is to drown it 
in a sea of love ;-)
So I'm looking forward to V being pushed into the Locked Room in book 7. 
I just *know* he can't swim!
