Hmm.  That whole scene of torment and humiliation was hardly 
a "little hex."

James and Sirius, unprevoked, set-upon Snape simply because they were 
bored stiff.  

Truth be told, the image of an out-numbered, young Snape literally 
choking on soap bubbles while he was helplessly immobilized was 
actually pretty disturbing and traumatic...and then there was the 
whole subsequent humiliation...ouch.

Equally disturbing was James' justification:  "It's more the fact 
that he [Snape] exists."

And Remus, despite his disapproving of the actions and being a 
prefect to boot, sat-by and did nothing (which now explains why Snape 
would later assume Remus was in on the "prank").
