THANK YOU Jenny. 

They segregated these children promoting more intra-collegiate (okay 
not the best word to use but it's the closet I can get without making 
one up) rivalry and dissent.

I think the Sorting Hat song followed one of the story threads: the 
road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Dumbledore thought 
withholding information from Harry was the best thing to do. Perhaps 
The 4 felt that having 4 separate Houses filled with students THEY 
wanted, would be best for Hogwarts? But note too, that this system 
was a failure. As the Sorting Hat says: "never since the Founders 
four were whittled down to three have tghe Houses been united AS THEY 
WERE MEANT TO BE" (emphasis mine).
