Actually we do know what year Zacharias Goldstein is in, he's in Harry's year. He's one of the names that was on the list of students in Harry's year that JK showed on the BBC documentary which was called "Harry Potter and Me". I seem to remember someone on HPfGU made screen caps and put them in the files section but I can't find them (does a mod know where they are?). 
I remember this because when I saw the list I was wondering if any of them would come up in future books so I was really happy when I saw his name come up because I was glad to see she was bringing in some of the people from that list. Michael Corner is another one from Harry's year who was on the list. They were obviously some of the people that got skipped at the sorting ceremony but she wanted to bring in later.
