I could, if he was indeed in Slytherin.  Many, many kids do crappy 
things against their better judgment to fit in.  In the wizarding 
world, that might include Snape trying to hide Muggle birth 
desperately from other Slytherins and playing the game by 
insulting "Mudbloods" like that in order to fit in and to pl;ay the 
pureblood image.  Heck, hypothetically, there's also the fact that 
you could learn to hate what you fear: he might hate his 
hypothetical Muggle birth because it places him in danger in 
Slytherin, grow to loathe and hate it, and in hating it, grow to 
deny it within himself and mock it in anyone else.  After all, 
happens in the real world too for those who are ashamed of their 
background.  Some grow to deny it just that way. It would make sense.
