Ah, but Charlotte, that is what makes it so interesting!  Harry 
didn't throw it away.  Psychologically this is showing his inner 
turmoil -- on one hand he feels angry and deserted, so he lashes out 
and smashes the mirror -- on the other hand he longs to have Sirius 
back, and so is unable to actually throw the mirror away.  But in the 
Potterverse, that isn't the end of it.  The mirror's smashed, but 
that is nothing a simple Reparo charm can't fix.  Because it is still 
in the trunk, we will be seeing it again.  Otherwise JKR would have 
had him toss it in the lake.
