OOP - Why James changed

Maybe something happened to James which forced him to grow up in a 
hurry - just like Harry.  The thing that pops into my head is the 
death of his parents and/or the rest of his family (The Potters).  

I could kill(!) Harry for not asking Sirius about what happened to 
his grandparents when Sirus talked about how he stayed with them!!!!
