I also felt the fifth book did not match the others. The plot twists
and subtle hints in the previous books had kept me always trying to
work out how they ended. I was never sure until the last page of how
everything fitted together. In contrast, the fifth book seemed to
offer two alternatives to me - either sirius was being tortured by
voldemort, or harry was being lured to a meeting with a bunch of
death eaters. From the hints given: Harry's occlumancing lessons
(sorry can't quite remember the term now) being given such importane
by Dumbledore, Dumbledore avoiding Harry, the untrustworthy elf being
the only witness that Sirius wasn't safe and well, etc. I found it
pretty obvious that there was going to be a battle scene, with half
the DA. And like others, I found this battle dissapointing - I mean,
for one thing it seemed unrealistic that these all-powerful Death
Eaters should find a bunch of kids so hard to handle. It did seem
like some dodgy film scene where you just know the good guys ocme out
on top. And personally I wasn't at all moved by Sirius's death,
possibly because I didn't feel sympathetic towards his character -
and maybe also because I'd predicted Molly Weasley dying and am glad
she hasn;t! One other critiscism is to do with the excursions into
the Forbidden forest - it all just seemed a bit uneccessary - unless
maybe grawp becomes important in the later books? But if not then
that part also seemed fairly predictable and in a book 766 pages long
perhaps in need of editing out....
Anyway, I enjoyed many things about the books, especially the
Umbridge woman, I enjoyed sympathising with the undedogs in all her
scenes!
Hope I haven't offended anyone - I enjoyed reading the book, but the
end I felt wasn't as good as the others.
