I definitely think you're onto to something. Before I
read OOP I always thought that Harry would win and he
would somehow become 'normal' (since the last chapter
of the last book is supposed to be "the Boy who Lived"
or "The Boy who died" or something like that). Now
this "normalness" I thought would go above and beyond
him losing the scar and maybe more along the lines of
him being unrecognizable to the WW (ie he would
physically change since there have been pictures of
him for example) or at the extreme him being muggle.

HOWEVER, with the prophecy in OOP, I think Neville may
have a bigger part to play in this whole series.
While Voldemort has physically marked Harry, maybe he
has marked having insane parents due to the actions of
his DE. For all we know, maybe the prophecy refers to
them both (although it does say he) giving more
credence to the possibilities that a) Harry will die
at the end (but still resulting in a defeat of
Voldemort or b) he will be 'normal' ie not the
"saviour" of the WW at the conclusion.

I mean why would JKR go to the trouble to bring up
Neville when everyone including us and Voldemort think
Harry is the key. Harry could possibly be a pawn by
DD who made sure that Harry would be marked so as to
throw off suspicion when Voldemort heard the prophecy
and allow Neville to develop and be ready when the
time comes.

Now I know most are thinking that Harry is indeed
special, etc. The prophecy and this interpretation
does not preclude the importance of Harry and his
mother's sacrifice for him but suggest the
possibilities that this sacrifice was just that and
not fated and seen as pivotal in the fate of the WW
and of a more tangible (and powerful) magic inherent
in Neville which he has not used perhaps because of
the fear of what happened to his parents(which I think
explains the squib like tendencies) and the lack of
his own wand or self-confidence. All the sacrifice
allows Harry is a particular "hardiness" to the Dark
Lord.

If Neville is not important (prophecywise) I think
they will both have something to offer to the final
fight. Harry has his powerful emotions which
Voldemort can't stand, and Neville seems to be
increasingly more powerful with a possible desire for
revenge. I wouldn't be surprised to see Neville take
Voldemort face on near the end. Whether he survives
is the question.

Glad that rant is over,

Neb
