While that's probably right, we don't actually know anything at all 
about any Potters other than Harry, James and Lily.  We have no idea 
if James' parents were loving and doting or not.  I doubt they were 
actively cruel, but James' showing off and arrogance could easily be 
the product of a disinterested and unengaged family life as a kid as 
well.

And, now that we've got a taste of it, I find it easier all the time 
to propose these darker soap opera-ish backgrounds for even the good 
guys that we never would have suspected previously!  ;)
