OOP: Thestral Sightings

Me:
I don't think he "killed" Tom Riddle because he wasnt' whole yet.  If 
he were, then Ginny would have been dead.  As it was, Harry ended 
Tom's "memory" before it was completed.  As to Quirrel, he did not 
witness that.  Dumbledore stated that he died when Voldemort fled his 
body, and Harry was unconcious by then.

My question on the thestrals is why couldn't Harry see them at the 
end of GoF when the carriages came to pick them up?  Was he not able 
to until he'd had nightmares all summer and really proccessed 
Cedric's death through his mind, or was it simply an oversight?
