Miss America - 
I think that the implication was the fall thru the curtain is what 
killed him.  Also, when the kiddos first found that room, Neville, 
Harry, and Luna heard the voices... they are also the ones able to 
see the thestrals... could that be related?  Perhaps they can hear 
the dead behind the curtain whispering to them?
