you can take UMBRAGE at a remark (offense); umbrage can also mean 
covered or dark (UMBR...ELLA)

i just looked it up
it can mean:

1. Offense; resentment: took umbrage at their rudeness. 

2. Something that affords shade. 
Shadow or shade. See Synonyms at shade. 

3. A vague or indistinct indication; a hint.
