I've been thinking about this some more:

I'm especially interested in how it might apply to Sirius. If he moved
out at 16, would he have been feeling tension with his family before
that? I think so. The house does seem to lean Slytherin in decor among
other things.
Could the Hat have sensed he didn't want to be like them, and placed
him if Gryffindor for that (going against family tradition) show of
bravery? That would have put a further strain on the relationship.
I know Hagrid's comments about all the DEs being Slytherin make it
more likely Sirius was Slytherin, too. In that case, his break with
his family could have turned his friendships within the Slytherin
house colder. Maybe that's why he sought friends outside?
I'm trying not to ramble, not doing much good of it though.
