Hi All,
We've been having a brief discussion on HPFGU-Movie about ratings
for The Matrix Movie and it got me thinking about the prophesy again.
<begin quote>
when Sybill Trelawney spoke, it was not in her usual ethereal,
mystic voice, but in the harsh, hoarse tones Harry had heard her use
once before:
`The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches
born
to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies
and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have
power the Dark Lord knows not
and either must die at the hand of
the other for neither can live while the other survives
the one
with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh
month dies
'
<end quote>
This prophesy is a double edged sword.
On the one hand this is great for Dumbledore since it gives him
access to a weapon (Harry or Neville) that may vanquish Voldemort.
On the other hand it may have been a disaster. Prior to his meeting
with Trelawny, Dumbldore and Voldemort both appear to have thought
of Dumbledore as the more powerful wizard. But now they learn
that "THE ONE with the power to vanquish the Dark :Lord approaches".
She did not prophesy "ONE with the power to vanquish the Dark :Lord
approaches". I.e. she told Dumbledore, and Voldemort through his
eavesdropper, that Dumbledore does not have the power to vanquish
him. That must have been a blow to his battle plans.
With that news Voldemort can be more aggressive to Dumbledore.
Firstly, he tries to dispatch of Harry (which proves a big mistake).
Then when he does return to full strength, he has the luck that the
Ministry of Magic does not believe him, so it pays to stay in
secret. He also knows how effective Dumbledore and the Order are
against his Death Eaters. But now many of his supporters are back in
Azkaban, and the Ministry knows of his presence. If I were him I'd
wait for Harry to go to Privet Drive and then I'd go to Hogwarts to
kill Dumbledore, safe in the knowledge that he hasn't the power to
vanquish me.
There's a long line of great leaders working for `the one' to
fulfill a prophesy: Dumbledore, Morpheus in The Matrix, Yoda in
Strar Wars, John the Baptist in The Bible. It's a shame we are not
shown how they coped with the knowledge that they were not the one.
Cheers,
Dumbledad.
