Subject: [HPforGrownups] OotP: Harry's attitude - spoilers!

Yay! I love the way JKR portrays Harry in this book!

  Let's review...
  1. He's 15 years old... hormones, puberty, insecurity, girls... tough
  time of life anyway!
  2. Everywhere he goes someone tries to kill him - bummer for anyone!
  3. No one will tell him what's going on... secrets and lies abound...
must say that is frustrating for us as well as him!
  4. He's famous, and for that everyone is jealous of him - and all he
wants is to know his parents! He didn't choose to be Voldemort's
undoing! He doesn't want anyone to stare at his scar or to ask
  stupid questions... poor kid.
  5. He's HP... and still no one will listen to him when he says Voldy
is back! Not only that, they question his sanity or call him a liar!
  6. He gets banned from Quidditch - the one and only thing that has
  been consistently pleasant for him!

  need I go on?

This kid has every right to be upset, hurt, angry. Life has given
him a raw deal, why shouldn't he be angry?!?

  thoughts?

  Jennifer T. adds:

I completely agree here. I've seen a rather large number of posts go by complaining about Harry's attitude, but frankly, I'm shocked that it took this long to manifest itself. After the vicious mental abuse from the Dursley's, numerous attempts on his life within the Wizarding World, and being more or less ignored (by means of information) by his Mentor (Dumbledore), I can't imagine him not acting like this. He's angry, and tired of the bull$hit. I felt Harry's pain in this book. So badly, in fact, that I have yet to start reading it again (as a reference - I read GoF three times in a week). I hate that Harry has had to put up with so much in his young life. I think most teenagers in the muggle world would either be contemplating suicide, or else they'd be juvenile delinquents.

I fully understood Harry's rage at Dumbledore in the end of the book. While I realize that Dumbledore had his reasons for distancing Harry, I also feel that Harry should have been given a reason for everything that was going on, even if it was just passed on (Hey Harry, Voldemort's going to use your dreams to lie to you) by another member of the order.

Heck, at this point, I'd be satisfied with things just going Harry's way.
