"Sirius didn't have his mirror on him when he went through
the archway,
said a small voice in Harry's head. That's why it's not
working
.
"Harry remained quite still for a moment, then hurled the mirror
back into the
trunk where it shattered. He had been convinced, for a whole shining
minute,
that he was going to see Sirius, talk to him again
.
"Disappointment was burning in his throat. He got up and began
throwing
his things pell-mell into the trunk on top of the broken mirror-"

While reading JKR's books it has struck me many times that she
doesn't
usually elaborate on things that are not significant. I think Sirius
carried the
mirror with him to the other side when he went past the black curtain
and
Harry and he will use the two-way mirrors to communicate between the
worlds of the Living and the Dead.

I think the reason Harry's initial attempt at communication with
Sirius failed
because he did not have an adequate "bridge" to cross the
chasm between
life and death. He and his mirror were "living" while Sirius
and his mirror were
"dead". In his grief he smashes the mirror in his trunk (not
in the fireplace or
some such place where it will be lost forever) and throws his robes
over it
where he will no doubt forget it again until next school term
when he
needs his robes.

But how does a mirror "die" if not by breaking? This
"dead" mirror has
remained with the living on Harry's side of the arch.

I will be very interested in seeing what happens next time Harry
uncovers that
mirror.
