That's it! Sirius did not die because Harry needed to learn a lesson
about death - he deals with death every single day as a kid with no
parents. Sirius also did not die so Harry would be angrier at
Voldemort - how much angrier can Harry get?
JKR chose for Sirius to die because Harry needs to get a grip on
himself. He is, far and away, the most powerful wizard at Hogwarts
and can give adults a run for their money as well, as we've seen more
than once. Throughout OoP, though, Harry is emotionally out of
control. This is dangerous. This is what Voldemort is feeding on.
In life, if we want to fight something bigger and more powerful than
we are, we can't just rush ahead, yelling "Stop!". Corruption is not
exposed suddenly and randomly. There are plans formed and carried
out. Evidence is collected. Conversations are rehearsed and so on.
What Harry needs to do is to review what happened at the MoM and learn
how to avoid something like that from happening again. He really
needs to learn Occlumency. He needs to listen to Dumbledore. He
needs to channel his anger. He needs to communicate when he senses
things are wrong (like when Kreacher was no where to be found, for
example).
If Harry can do these things, Sirius's death may not have been in
vain. If Voldemort can trick Harry, there's no reason why Harry
cannot turn the tables on him. If Voldemort can channel his hatred
through Harry, Harry should be able to turn it around and send it
back, or send his own powerful emotions to Voldemort. Harry needs to
find the control Voldemort has now, because he had none when he rushed
off to the MoM on false information.
