Delurking (waves sheepishly to group and the Elves and mods) to say I
totally agree with you. I thought it was an extremely good decision
to make Ron a prefect - both for his own sake
(confidence/responsibility/time with Hermione :-) and for Harry's.
Harry could not have been an effective prefect at the beginning of
the year with all the suspicion on him, including that of one of his
own dorm-mates. Ron, on the other hand, was given just enough power
to watch over Harry and (as happened in the fight with Seamus)
diffuse an ugly situation. And
you're right - had any of Ron's inferiority complex from GOF been
reinforced by his being the odd man out in OOP (assuming Harry and
Hermione as prefects) - combine it with Harry's aggrieved outbursts,
and that friendship is probably doomed.
