Well, if Snape was my character, and I wanted him to do something bad
(or establish that he has done something really disgusting), but at
the same time make him a human being... I'd do the same thing as JKR
is currently doing with Snape.
She portrays him as mean and all, but he's not one dimensionally
mean. He's human and as such has some good traits in him. He has a
history, a past. But something inside him is severly broken and that
makes him vulnerable to the Darkness.
The drawback about dark arts seems to be that the really bad stuff
only works if you WANT it to work, like the crucio spell. Allowing
Snape to teach DADA when he is using every chance to tantalize his
students in Potions would, IMO, be like unbottling a champagne bottle
that was previously well shaken.
What do you think he'd do when showing his students the unforgivable
curses? Remember the pleasure that Crouch jr. showed when teaching
DADA?
Then there is the still unresolved issues of the past, this very dark
secret of Snape's time as a death eater, his current loyalties, his
meddling behind the scenes (and he's obviously enjoying himself
getting some attention/praise for doing a job well). With all his
excellent contacts to Malfoy, wouldn't he have heard about Kreacher's
mission? It was Snape who insisted on Sirius staying back at the
manor when the rest of them were looking for Harry. Has Snape his
very own agenda? I think so. Maybe he wants to replace Voldemort, or
maybe he just wants to be the celebrity just once...
One other thing: The Occulumey lessons... it made me almost laugh
when Snape was telling Harry on about how you had to keep out all the
emotions, when at the same time he himself is so very out of control.
I was thinking "eat our own advice"... But then I was wondering if
maybe the fact that Snape *was* constanly keeping up his vigilance -
maybe to prevent Dumbledore from reading his memories? - was what
causes these lapses. The other thought was that if anger pushes
forward memories, it also could be deliberately used to present
certain memories that were previously "uploaded" via a pensive.

In any case, I am paying attention to Snape - this story isn't over
until the fat lady sings, and I hope that Snape will not be wasted in
the end.
