Me:
Well, I think I remember some posts on this particular aspect of the whole
James/Snape debate, and it's possible I wrote some of them, but to tell the
truth I can't remember. I don't think it came up very much. On this list. I
think. So, forgive me if I'm repeating myself.

The scene between Harry and Dudley and the scene between James, Black and
Snape are hardly similar. Let me point out some differences for you.

-James and Black attacked Snape from behind, disarmed him, fastened him to
the ground, choked him, humiliated him in from of a lot of people and likely
did more that we didn't get a chance to see.
-Harry taunted Dudley, hoping to get him mad.

-When Lily - the girl he liked and who was defending Snape - asked James
"What's he done to you?", all James can say is that "he exists".
-Now, no one confronted Harry in his confrontation with Dudley, but I'd like
to think that Harry would have been able to come up with a better answer if,
say, Cho had asked him what Dudley did to deserve it.

Aside from their interaction with Dudley and Snape:

-James hexed anyone who annoyed him.
-Harry does not.
