Almost exactly what I have been thinking, with the difference of the
scar:  

After V is killed, he becomes a ghost, but is still connected to Harry
by the scar.  V is also filled with rage and agony at being dead, so H
is in constant pain (he never kept up his occlumency lessons).  This
constant pain, added to the psychological scars from the war, induces
him to pass through the veil.  Not unlike Frodo going west.
