Gail B. (that's me) Wrote:

    > In the very first chapter of OoP, Harry hears a cracking
sound: "Harry was
>sure that the cracking had been made by someone Apparating of
Disapparating.
> It was exactly the sound Dobby made when he vanished in thin air"
(OoP
>p.7, US hardcover)

To Which Eric_And_Lauri (both of you?) Wrote:

And DD makes no noise when he apps/disapps. It seems to me Mr.
Weasley made a very small noise when he disapped to the Weasley
kitchen after fixing the Dursley's lounge in GOF? From reading the
various books, I suspect that the more "powerful" a wizard you are,
the less noise you make. Did F&G make a loud crack because they're
still learning? Just a theory!!!

Well...I just found this quote while doing my re-reading of OoP this
afternoon:

Arthur is walking Harry through the lobby of M.O.M. The fountain has just
been described and then this line: "...the tinkling hiss of falling water
was added to the pops and cracks of Apparators and the clatter of footsteps"
  (OoP page 127 US hardcover)

So it does seem that the sound of Dis/apparation is different under certain
circumstances. What those circumstances are we can only guess. But I'll
leave that guess-work to all you theorists out there :)>

-Gail B...a bit disappointed that her Flint fell through.
