So it would only have been bad if the charm wasn't mild, but strong?
I can't buy that. I noticed that in OoP, people in the Order and on
the side of Good in general do things that are sneaky, unfair, or just
plain mean. Harry's use of the Cruciatus Curse still bothers me, as
does Sirius's recklessness and encouragement of Harry to break rules
at school. All I can say to justify these things is that in times of
war, people do what they have to do to survive. Had Marietta told the
MoM people what she and her peers had been doing all year, the
consequences would have been very bad.
I think we'll be seeing more sketchy behavior in books 6 & 7, and I'm
willing to bet Harry will be a part of that.

I think Jenny is right- JKR seems to have embraced the "ends justify the
means" approach to her character's behavior.
Harry, Ron and Hermione have broken rules since book one- which didn't
bother me much as that's typical kid behavior.
What the Order is doing NOW though goes far beyond breaking rules. What
choice does the Order have however- particularly where (as in OOP) the
official "government" AND the bad guys are trying to get them? I hope JKR
delves into this issue a bit more though in the next book- i.e. some
discussion btwn the characters as to the slippery slope...
