Snape tells Harry that The Dark Lord is highly skilled at
Legilimency, which is *the ability to extract feelings and memories
from another person's mind.* Snape also says -*It is true, however,
that those who have mastered Legilimency are able, under certain
conditions, to delve into the minds of their victims and to interpret
their findings correctly.* Wouldn't this be considered some type of
mind reading? Snape - *The Dark Lord, for instance almost always
knows when somebody is lying to him.* Occlumency enables a person *to
shut down those feelings and memories that contradict the lie, and so
utter falsehoods in his presence without detection.*
How many times have we discussed whether or not Snape could read
minds? If you go back to the previous books you will find that Harry
mentions he has the feeling Snape can read he mind. Same thing for
Dumbledore. In CoS, Chapter 9 -* Dumbledore was giving Harry a
searching look. His twinkling light-blue gaze made Harry feel as
though he were being X-rayed.* Now we know Dumbledore is also
accomplished at Legilimens. So then is Legilimens only the ability to
detect when someone is lying to you or is there some type of mind-
reading going on? For instance, Snape discovered that Harry had been
dreaming about the door to the Dept of Mysteries (mind reading?) and
Snape was able to see many of Harry's memories, just as Harry was
able to see some of what was in Snape's mind. However, there is this
encounter between Snape and Harry in OoP- *His cold, dark eyes were
boring into Harry, who met his gaze unflinchingly, concentrating hard
on what he had seen in his dream, willing Snape to read it in his
mind, to understand...* But Dumbledore says it was the 'cryptic
warning' Harry gave to Snape that made Snape realize Harry had had a
vision of Sirius being trapped. So here we have Harry trying so very
hard to have Snape read his mind and yet D. say's it was the cyrptic
warning that alerted Snape. Does that mean Snape couldn't read
Harry's mind at the time even though Snape was obviously trying to do
that? I must admit I'm a bit confused about it.
Regardless, Voldemort does have the ability to detect when someone is
not telling him the truth.
