Me: 1) Harry didn't even know what the grim was until it was pointed
out to him in the bookstore; all he thought he saw was a dog. During
class that was when Prof. Trewlawney pointed out the grim to him, but
he knew what it was before then (pls correct me if I'm wrong & I will
go back & reread PoA).

2) We all know (well I think we do) that the solstice can happen two
times during the year, the summer solstice (June 21-longest day of
the year) & the winter solstice (Dec. 21-shortest day of the year).
Now after saying that I don't think JKR will have V's & HP's battle
in Dec. unless of course the rest of the books deals with the
aftermath of the battle.
My thinking is that the final battle will happen on June 21 & that
her final chapter will be an epilogue. In ref. to "at the soltice
will come a new" I'm thinking (pls bear with me here) that that means
the dawning of a new beginning in the wizarding world and "none will
come after" means that there won't be another hero b/c there won't be
a need for one – does that make sense.

Then of course there's another thought - the broken prophecy may have
nothing to do with HP.

I'm leaning towards Harry surviving while many of his friends die –
then again that may just be wishful thinking.
