I still am not sure he truly was reading his mind. Keep in mind in the
first couple of book that Harry was still a kid in many ways. 12 year old
kids might think they're being really clever and doing an excellent job
lying, but that doesn't mean that all adults are fooled by the kid's lies.
For all we know, Harry didn't look all that convincing and Snape, who of
course is looking for the worst in Harry anyway, is good at catching it.
Does not mean he was always reading Harry's mind. Personally, I wonder how
good he is at it without actually performing the Legilimens spell.
